Abstract / Description
The landslide destroyed three homes, two water tanks, and several other structures in the Balanced Rock Hills subdivision, which is located on the sliding mass. It also forced the temporary evacuation of condominiums and businesses near the toe of the slide. State Route 9 (seen here just outside the Zion.National Park entrance, which is to the right of photo) was damaged and closed for a brief time. This landslide is one of the largest ever recorded resulting from an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude. It is located further from the epicenter than landslides of this type previously recorded in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake, which were up to 30 km (20 mi) distant. The Springdale landslide was 45 km (28 mi) distant from the epicenter. The scarp is the fresh light-brown colored face below the cliff bands, and ranges up to 24 m (80 ft) in height. The slide mass encompasses an area about 1080 m (3600 ft) wide and 480 m (1600 ft) long. It is the area below the scarp, containing the gravel roads and structures, and all of the lower part of the photo except the extreme left. The slide moved downslope about 12 m (40 ft) and crossed the road in several places, surrounding, but miraculously not touching a restaurant as seen in.the middle of the photo.
