Abstract / Description
R-130, Slides S1043 to S1052 were donated by M. Lee Allison and taken December 1989. Shows various types of ground deformation (Cracks, fissures and scarps) caused during the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. There is considerable controversy about the process forming these features and whether or not they are 1) Tectonic in origin 2) Related to shattering caused by intensified ground shaking in certain areas such as ridge tops, or 3) Related to slope failure. Regardless, lack of distinct surface rupture along mapped fault traces for such a large magnitude earthquake(Ms=7.1) and ground deformation off of mapped fault traces where mitigation techniques are not practiced.
