Abstract / Description
Two children, who were walking on this sidewalk in Challis, Idaho, died , when the front of this building fell during the 1983 Borah Peak, Idaho earthquake (magnitude 7.3). The earthquake's epicenter was approximately 60 km (36 mi) distant from the town of Challis. Note the contrast between the wooden frame of the building and the stone facing. Wood is flexible and moves with the ground motion, but the stone facing is not flexible. This earthquake amounted to approximately 12.5 million dollars of damage in the two small towns of Challis and Mackay.
